Vikings take down Murray State; move to 6-0

The Viking look to score against Murray State

The Vikings just keep winning.
Jaycee Ingram and Madison Martin combined for 33 points, as the Vikings rode a strong four quarters to get a big 73-54 win on the road over Murray State on Thursday, Nov. 20.
Iv Jackson started the scoring, and completed the three point play and the Vikings were off and running. They opened the game on an 8-0 run, getting five points from Ingram in that stretch.
Murray State's offense got going, cutting the Vikings lead to three points. The Viking offense continued producing, getting a three from Niamh Chamberlain to extend the lead to six points. Chamberlain scored the final five points for the Vikings as they led 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Ingram opened the second quarter with a wide open three pointer as Grayson very quickly had a nine point lead. After a turnover at the other end, Ingram scored again on a free throw line jumper for their first double digit lead. Lily Melton capped an 8-0 run with a layup. The Viking defense was suffocating, holding Murray State without a field goal for the first 2:11 of the second quarter, while the offense built a 27-17 lead.
The Viking did have a scoring drought, going nearly four minutes in the second quarter without a field goal. A steal defensively by Tay Biglow led to a jumper on the offensive end to break the scoring drought.
Martin helped the Vikings close out the first half strong, connecting on a wide open three and Dree Johnson completed a three point play with six second left, as the Vikings took a 37-26 lead into the locker room.
"I thought we were pretty good offensively," Head Coach Steve Lowe said. "I didn't like that we were a bit stagnant, which I thought hurt us at times."
The Vikings continued their efficiency offensively in the second half, taking a 51-38 with 4:12 to play on another steal defensively, and Johnson and Martin on a 2 on 1 with Martin finishing the layup. The Vikings added on with a floater from Susan Fahnbulleh for a 14 point lead; 53-39. Murray State went on an 8-0 scoring run to cut it to six, but they would get no closer. Martin answered with a jumper to push the lead back up to eight at the end of the third quarter.
The defense took center stage in the fourth quarter, holding Murray State to just seven points, as the Viking offense put up 18 points to close out the win. The defense forced 23 Murray State turnovers on the night.
"Defensively we were pretty good," Coach Lowe said. "I think that's our calling card. Defensively we make it difficult on teams to score and it allows you some freedom to figure things out offensively. Getting turnovers and scoring in transition really helped us tonight,"
Ingram led the way with 18 points, while Martin had 15 points. On the glass, Jackson led with nine (six offense), with Fahnbulleh and Ingram each grabbing six boards.
"I thought Jaycee {Ingram} played a heck of a game tonight, making some big shots for us," he said. "Our whole team was making plays all night. This was a good challenge for our team tonight."
The Vikings return home for the first time in two weeks, welcoming Connors State to Viking Gym on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tip-off is set for 2pm.
