Vikings fall short against Murray State

The Murray State Aggies outscored the Vikings 43-31 in the second half, to send Grayson to a narrow 74-65 defeat on Thursday, Nov. 20.
The Vikings were scoreless for the first nearly 2:30 of the game, until Gelonni Ervin found a wide open Caleb Alcineus, who was running the floor on a 2 on 1 for the contested layup. The Aggies from Murray State led for a chunk of the first half, putting the Vikings in a six point deficit with just over 11 minutes to play. The Vikings erased that deficit in the span of about two minutes; Julian Greer tied the game at 17 with a contested three. Alcineus capped a 10-0 run with a pair of free throws for a 21-17 lead. The Aggies took over the lead later in the half, leading by four with just over a minute to play at 31-27. Dupree Fletcher Jr hit a big three to cut the deficit to one, and added a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession. Jordan Williams capped a 7-0 run with a drive to the basket for a layup as the Vikings took a 34-31 lead into the half.
A layup by Greer in the first minute of the second half extended the lead to 36-31. Murray State cut into the lead, but a three from Fletcher Jr pushed the Viking lead out to six points, four minutes into the second half.
Grayson maintained their lead, until a 7-0 Murray State run put the Vikings in a one point hole. Greer quickly ended a run with a baseline one handed slam to help Grayson retake the lead. Murray State caught fire offensively from there, and the Vikings battled but fell short on the scoreboard.
Alcineus and Fletcher Jr led the way with 17 points each; Alcineus led the team in rebounds with seven, and Fletcher Jr dished out four assists.
The Vikings returned home to take on ninth ranked Connors State on Saturday, Nov. 22.
