Vikings defeat EOSC; win streak at eight games

Five Grayson Vikings finished with double digit scoring and the Vikings scored a season high in points as they continued their historic start with a 92-68 road win over Eastern Oklahoma State College on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
The Vikings raced out to an early 9-2 run capped off by a drive and floater from Dree Johnson. The defense was suffocating early on, holding the Eastern Oklahoma offense, who came in to the game averaging 36 three point field goal attempts per game at bay. The defense gave up just two points in nearly six minutes of game time in the opening period.
Eastern Oklahoma State College was able to get their offense going, responding with a 14-6 scoring run to take a one point lead with 1:58 left in the quarter. The Viking offense responded quickly, getting a three from Lily Melton on the other end to retake the lead. After Eastern tied it, Tay Biglow drove right by her defender for an easy layup, as Grayson held on to a two point lead after one quarter.
In the very early stages of the second quarter, Eastern Oklahoma connected on a three, but as they did in the opening quarter, the Vikings responded; this time with an 11-0 run to take a 10 point lead. The defense which has been a strength all season, held Eastern without a field goal for just under five minutes in the quarter.
The defense continued to give Eastern fits, which led to transition baskets, including Melton, who helped the Vikings open up a 13 point lead at 36-23. The Vikings would go on to score 13 points over the final four minutes to take a 49-36 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Vikings kept their pulse on the lead, maintaining a double digit lead throughout the third quarter. Eastern Oklahoma did cut it to 10 on a few occasions, but Grayson always had an answer. Susan Fahnbulleh connected on a jumper from the wing to give Grayson a 15 point lead in the second half. A short time later, Biglow was good on a baseline jumper for a 17 point lead.
Five quick points in the fourth quarter; A three from Biglow and a layup from Jaycee Ingram pushed the lead up over 20 points, and Grayson was able to close out the victory.
For the Vikings, it was the first time this season they had scored at least 20 points in every quarter in a game.
"From an offensive standpoint, I thought we made some progress in some areas doing some different formations," Head Coach Steve Lowe said. "We scored the ball pretty well ourselves today. Defensively, I didn't think we were bad, even though this was the most points we had given up all year. Credit to them {Eastern Oklahoma State College}, they made some shots and made some threes early. But credit to our girls too, they played well as the game went on."
Leading the way in points was Burckhartzmeyer with 18, Martin had 16, Melton and Biglow each had 14, and Jackson had 13. For all five, it was a season high in points. Melton (4/7) and Burckhartzmeyer (3/8)  combined to go 7/15 from the three point line.
"There was a point in the fall where Simm {Coach Simeon Burton} and I were saying that Lily {Melton} was pushing starter type minutes," Coach Lowe said. "With her injury, she's realistically about two months behind everyone else. This was a confidence game for her, and I'm expecting with more time, that she'll be back to what she was doing before she got hurt."
With a little extended break, Coach Lowe likes where the team is at and said the break is coming at the right time, so his team can recharge, spend time with family, rest some nagging injuries and just get away from basketball for a few days before coming back.
The Vikings will return home next Thursday, Dec. 4, taking on Paris.
"They have good guards, and they have two big post players," he said. "The biggest challenge for us will be guarding their post players and making sure we get rebounds."
Tip-off from Viking Gym is set for 5pm.
