Strong second half sends Viking men to victory

A strong second half by Julian Greer and the Vikings overcame a first half double digit deficit lifting them to a thrilling 99-98 victory, withstanding a furious comeback by the Temple Leopards for their first conference win on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
The Vikings faced a 15 point deficit early in this one, but continued to play their game, making shots and getting stops when they needed to. Greer connected on a bank shot to cut the deficit to 13. Later in the half, Dupree Fletcher Jr scored five straight points to cut the Temple lead to 38-31. The Viking stayed within single points for much of the remainder of the first half. Judah Peña hit a three near the end of the half to cut the deficit to eight points; 52-44 at the half.
The Vikings opened the second half with a quick 6-0 run to draw within two points. Caleb Alcineus capped the run with a bank shot. Temple answered with a basket, but Greer came right back to keep it a single possession game with a step back jumper. Temple extended their lead to five, but Greer answered right back with a three. Davion Hampton forced a jump ball on the defensive end, then Gelonni Ervin tied it up with a big dunk. The Vikings took their first lead at 63-62 on a layup from Hampton. That kickstarted an 11-3 run capped by a three pointer from Fletcher Jr and a free throw later on by Ervin. The Vikings stayed hot and pushed their lead to 14 points, getting a layup and a jumper by Greer to lead 93-79.
Temple mounted a comeback, going on an 11-2 scoring run to draw within five, but Fletcher Jr hit a contested layup to push the lead back out to seven with 1:21 to play. The Leopards cut the lead to just one point on a layup to cap a 6-0 run with 20 seconds left. Greer capped his career night with a pair of free throws with six seconds left. The Vikings defended the three point line very well on Temple's final possession and the Leopards scored a layup at the buzzer. 
Greer finished with a career high 39 points, including 4-6 from the three point line. Fletcher Jr finished with a career high 28 points. Both Fletcher Jr and Greer had a team high nine rebounds Ervin had 10 points off the bench.
The win was Grayson's first in conference play, they enjoyed a season best 42 percent clip from the three point line.
The Vikings will remain home, taking on McLennan on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
