A 39 point scoring outburst after a low scoring first half and an outstanding defensive performance lifted the 24th ranked Grayson Vikings to a 59-37 victory over Cisco to remain undefeated in conference play.
Fia Filoialii got the Vikings on the board with a three pointer a minute into the game. She scored the first five for Grayson. Tay Biglow added a transition layup and it was a 7-2 Viking run to begin the game, where the score remained for the first four minutes of action. A turnover led to a Madison Martin layup and it was quickly a 9-2 lead. Cisco cut into the lead, but Filoialii continued her strong first quarter with a layup to take a 12-7 lead.
Defenses took center stage in the second quarter, as both offenses scored under 10 points. The good news for the Vikings was that they still had a 20-16 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, both teams were locked in a battle. Dree Johnson broke a 31-31 tie with a three, jump starting a 7-0 run that saw two Cisco turnovers leading to layups by Martin and Lily Melton. The Vikings seized the momentum taking a 38-31 lead, and continued the momentum into the fourth quarter.
The Viking defense held Cisco without a field goal for 14:20 of the second half, giving up a three pointer with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter after the Vikings were up by double digits helping them close out the 59-37 victory.
Filoialli led the way with 14 points, with Johnson chipping in 10. The defense forced Cisco into 28 turnovers, while Grayson came away with 16 steals as a team.
A tough test awaits the Vikings next week as they welcome sixth ranked McLennan to Viking Gym. Tip-off is set for 5pm.
