A double digit deficit wasn't going to stop the 21st ranked Grayson Vikings from remaining undefeated in conference play.
With the Vikings trailing by 15 points, Grayson's offense found another gear, outscoring Weatherford 29-15 in the final frame for a 79-75 win on Monday, Feb. 2 to remain undefeated in conference play.
Weatherford was in control from the game's opening tip, jumping out to an 8-1 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Jaycee Ingram's layup, stopped the run and gave the Vikings their first field goal of the contest. The Vikings cut it to two on a three from Tay Biglow, but Weatherford went on a 14-6 scoring run to take a double digit lead at 24-14. Lily Melton cut it back to seven points with a three near the end of the corner and Biglow answered a Weatherford basket with a free throw line jumper with 10 seconds left to cut the deficit to seven points; 26-19 at the end of the quarter.
A 7-1 run by the Coyotes over the first 3:40 of the second quarter put the Vikings back into a double digit hole. The scoring drought continued, as Grayson had just three points through the first nearly six and a half minutes of the quarter. A layup by Ingram with 3:40 left in the first half was the Vikings first field goal of the quarter, as the Coyotes had built a 34-22 lead beforehand. Ingram's layup cut the deficit to single digits, but Weatherford built their lead back up to double digits heading into the locker room.
Weatherford maintained their double digit lead throughout the third quarter and the fourth quarter, everything changed.
Madison Martin was left wide open for a three to open the fourth quarter and a steal that led to a layup by Susan Fahnbulleh and the Vikings very quickly cut the deficit to just five. After Weatherford hit a three, Biglow cut it to six points and the Viking offense continued plugging along, cutting it to two points on an Iv Jackson layup with 8:05 left in the game. The Coyotes kept their pulse on the lead, pushing their lead back out to seven points, but the Vikings pushed back, taking the lead at 71-70 on a layup by Ingram with 2:48 left in the game. Both teams traded free throws, but the Vikings pulled ahead, taking the lead on a jumper from Fahnbulleh. Weatherford answered back, but two crucial free throws from Ingram gave the Vikings the lead for good. Weatherford's potential go-ahead three rimmed out and the Vikings completed their comeback to move to 6-0 in conference play.
Five players finished in double figures, led by Biglow's 17 points. Ingram had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Martin finished with 13 points, Jackson had 11 off the bench along with four steals and Fahnbulleh contributed 10 points.
The Vikings close out their road trip with a short trip down Hwy 75 to take on Collin. Tip-off is set for 5pm on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
