Five straight points by Southwest Christian down the stretch was the difference in a narrow 69-64 defeat for the Grayson Vikings on Saturday, Feb. 7.
SWCC opened the game on an 11-2 run, but the Vikings weren't phased. They got their offense going and pulled within five before Caleb Alcineus cut it to three points on a contested drive and finish at the rim. Jordan Williams was good on a bank shot later in the half and the Vikings cut trailed by just four; 29-25 at the half.
Grayson remained in striking distance in the second half. Judah Peña drove and scored to pull the Vikings within three. Julian Greer finished at the rim, drawing the foul and converting the three point play to tie things at 54 with 5:22 remaining in the second half.
Out of the timeout, SWCC scored five straight points, but the Vikings kept fighting. Alcineus hit a big three to draw the Vikings within two points. Williams hit a pull up jumper and later hit a three of his own to pull the Vikings back within two points at 64-62 with 1:22 remaining in regulation. SWCC answered with a three pointer out of a timeout and the Viking rally fell just short.
Alcineus and Willliams had career nights scoring, finishing with 20 and 19 points respectively. Alcineus finished with seven rebounds, with Gelonni Ervin tallying 13 rebounds to lead the team. Greer chipped in 12 points scoring for Grayson.
The Vikings will remain at home, welcoming Ranger to town in a game that was rescheduled during the winter storm. Tip-off on Monday, Feb. 9 is set for 7pm.
