The third ranked Grayson Vikings continued their hot start to the season with a sweep of NTCC in their home opener on Monday, Feb. 9.
Game one
The Vikings took home a 7-1 victory in game one.
Aniyah Pequeno led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Matti Matthews. Paisley Needham plated the first run with a fielder's choice.
Lillian Barraza tied the game at 1-1 with a homer in the second inning.
In the fourth inning, the Vikings loaded the bases. Pequeno drove in a run with a single and Matthews cleared the bases with a three run double. Two batters later, Layla Sons made it a 6-1 game with an RBI single. Carolyn Koval homered in the sixth for a 7-1 lead. The homer was her first of the year.
Offensively, the Vikings tallied eight runs as a team, with seven different players recording a hit led by Pequeno with two. Matthews drove in three runs to lead the team.
Moreaux followed up her 13 strikeout performance last weekend with a complete game one hitter. She gave up just one run and struck out nine, walking none.
Game two
The Vikings completed the sweep, winning game two 9-3.
After a scoreless first inning, Northeast Texas plated three runs in the second inning. Hadlee Faulkner drove in a pair with a double and Maya Pardue added an RBI single for a 3-0 NTCC lead.
The Vikings came right back with a pair of runs in their half of the second inning. Carolyn Koval hit a one out single and moved to third on a double by Addisyn Cox. Maile Larsen came up with a clutch two run double to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Vikings took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Cox led off with a walk and two batters later, Larsen deposited one over the fence for a two run homer and a 4-3 lead. In the fifth inning, Koval and Paisley Needham drew walks and scored on a three run homer by Mia Krueger. A fielder's choice by Koval in the sixth and an RBI single by Krueger were runs eight and nine in the sixth inning.
Five different Vikings recorded at least two hits. Pequeno, Matthews, Cox and Krueger all had two hits, while Larsen had three hits. Larsen and Krueger each drove in four runs in the victory.
In the circle, Emily Bowden started the game. She threw two innings, giving up three hits and one earned run. Riley Mays threw the final five innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five.
Softball will take on Butler (1:30) and Eastern Oklahoma State College (3:45) on Friday at the Denison Winter Blast Tournament hosted by THF.
